In taking stock of the status of American adolescents and Waldorf high school foreign language teaching at the beginning of the 21st century, it is sobering to note that American adolescents have lived their entire lives in the information age, an age characterized by electronic media, advertising blitzes and technology. Many other markers of the day and age in which we live, such as instant communication and instant gratification contrast strongly with the ultimate goal of the Waldorf foreign language program, i.e. awakening a patient understanding of and empathy for one's fellow human beings. There is no need to grow despondent or morose about the current situation. What the Waldorf approach to foreign language study offers to adolescents is a healthy balance to the technology culture.
