When we use our hands to shape the different forms of the developing embryo, we experience a similar inner metamorphosis to that of the nascent human being. Whereas the eye distanced itself from the object of an anatomical study when we are making use of drawings, pictures or films, quite to the contrary when modeling with clay every individual gesture contributes to our identification with the work in progress.  The experience is of a fundamentally different nature - and above all it is enduring.
